Bringing together university scientists and K-12 teachers

I organized (in collaboration with a working group established by the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence, COSEE) a "Science in Action Night at the Museum". On Feb. 16, 2012 we brought together 12 professors from the University of South Carolina that do environmental research and over 100 K-12 teachers from around the State of South Carolina. The event was hosted by the SC State Museum.  Each university professor set up a booth within the museum that displayed their research.  K-12 teachers then circulated through the museum and talked with the scientists about opportunities for bringing science into their classrooms and for collaborating on scientific projects.  The goal of this event was to enhance K-12 science education within South Carolina and to simultaneously enhance the broader impacts of the research that is being conducted at USC. The picture below shows my grad student Ben Toscano explaining his research to some teachers. The pictures to the right are of me doing the same.

Visiting classrooms to share the excitement of marine biology

Education outreach

I am actively engaged in education outreach to bring scientific exploration into the classroom for K-12 students. This includes the following activities.

  • I visit local grade schools several times per year to provide presentations on some aspect of marine science or the ocean environments. I started this as a graduate student in New Hampshire and actively continue this today, visiting schools in the Columbia, SC area. I work with teachers to develop presentations that integrate with and complements instruction by the teachers. These presentations include both individual classroom presentations as well as presentations to several classes combined. To date I have presented to more than 1500 students. Please send me an email if you are a grade school teacher in the Columbia area and would like me to visit your class. (Click here to send an email.)
    • Click here to see a short video of kindergarten students at Ballentine Elementary School (Ballentine, SC) viewing a brittle star.
    • Click here to see a short video of a presentation to a second grade class about life history stages of animals in the ocean.
  • I set up booths each year for Career Day at local middle schools where I talk to 6th and 7th graders about careers in marine science.
  • I work with K-12 teachers and University of South Carolina students in the College of Education to develop K-12 lesson plans that address South Carolina academic standards and are based on research conducted in my lab.
